For the sake of her marriage: Compensating for a gendered world

Kaleidoscope has experienced the presence of several domestic helps since his father could afford them. He has seen never ending complains from his mother about the bad performance of these maids. Last week one of  the old maids Tarulata, her now married daughter Krishna and granddaughter Ghutul who is only four months of age arrived when Kaleidoscope was reading Jonathan Glancey's Nagaland. He was quite unaware about the atrocities that people of Nagaland are facing as he has been unaware about Tarulata. Tarulata with her granddaughter on her lap smiles at Kaleidoscope and says "see, this is the reason I choose to work as a domestic help"

When Tarulata in late 1980s gave birth to Krishna, a girl child she was told by her mother-in-law and her husband that she is responsible for the birth of this girl child, and that she must arrange for her marriage. Tarulata cried with helplessness but slowly accepted the challenge and took up the profession of domestic help in many houses including that of Kaleidoscope's. Tarulata's husband over the years have done reasonably well in his shoe and chappal manufacturing business. In late 1990s Tarulata's husband repeatedly requested Tarulata to give up her profession and start relaxing for a while, but that request was futile. When Krishna comes up to sixteen she also accompanies Tarulata and finally in 2009 Krishna is married to a small business man. Over the year Tarulata buys the jewelry, pays off the dowry and now holds a smiling face with her granddaughter in her lap. After Krishna's marriage Tarulata gives up the profession and now helps her husband more actively in his business.

Kaleidoscope exhales and comes back to his room with a fear of unknown future of Krishna with her daughter.

Deferred food security is denial of food grains

Kaleidoscope comes across news papers and magazines regularly to make himself disappointed. Here is yet another story where Kaleidoscope is disappointed with the world he is given to live in.

A woman labourer in a tea estate in Assam holds a severely undernourished child. India's population pays the bulk of its healthcare expenses out-of-pocket, as governmental spending is low. Photo: Ritu Raj Konwar Accessed from http://beta.thehindu.com

Kaleidoscope hears about food security, which makes access to food a fundamental human right. It is an wonderful idea for a country which shows six percent growth even in the time of the great recession and bankruptcy.

It is a happy go moment for Kaleidoscope when he finds an actual acceptance of India's rural huger and poverty. UPA does not stop there, but think of changing it. Now three days back on April 23, eGoM (empowered group of ministers) asks the planning commission to submit comprehensive data on BPL families. Sharad Power says that food security was not on the agenda. The basic discussions are not even completed as they are skeptic about the Public Distribution System which is expected to play a nodal role in implementing food security as a major poverty alleviation scheme.

Kaleidoscope is extremely disappointed with this position

First, India does not have reliable data regarding BPL even Tendulkar Committee report which says the existence of 37% BPL is not taken seriously and government is thinking of curtailing the number of beneficiaries under food security coverage.

Second, criteria for BPL selection are problematic as it ignores simple ethnographic fact that people live in multiple worlds, not in a single world, therefore, BPL in one world is different from BPL in the other.

After months of preparation and agenda setting, UPA is unable rely on its own mechanism which indicates serious mismanagement.

kaleidoscope is frustrated to see that all these are happening in a situation when India is criticised for contributing highest (42%) percentage [UNICEF's Calculation] in world's Under nourished children which Manmohan Singh admits a National shame and India is blaming rural poor for supporting Naxalite movements across 195 districts in 16 states that already costs hundreds of lives according to South Asia Terrorism Portal.

Neoliberalism Unplugged? Pretty Confused

Kaleidoscope is pretty confused now and then so you can let it go or perhaps can spend some time reading this.

The budget reflects: NEOLIBERAL AGENDA

  • a reduction in public distribution system,
  • private participation in agriculture sector like never before,
  • little increase in allocation at sectors like agriculture and irrigation,
  • foodstuffs stocking is not a priority which indicates lack of positive attitude towards price rise,
  • Tax concession for middle class
(see Frontline March 26, 2010)

Now the difficult and 'should not say' section: OPERATION GREEN HUNT

Moment from Operation Green hunt
  • Over 40,000 paramilitary troops and policeman
  • Challenges like Human Rights violation is not addressed.
  • Issues of killing of innocent people (From a Few at The Hindu to 30 to 40 per Week at The Frontline)
  • Issues of identifying REAL Naxals and villagers
  • Issues of real problems at the real context
Precursor of Operation Green Hunt (http://indianvanguard.wordpress.com/2009/12/15/chhattisgarh-groups-plan-opposition-to-operation-green-hunt/)

ADDING THE TWO

Neoliberal budget and continuation of Corporate hegemony

Invasion to tribal land where minerals and valuable resources rest. yet to be captured and capitalise.

So its Kaleidoscope's confusion - Are we ready to evacuate 'them' (Naxalite tribals!) from their homeland and start capitalise 'our' resources?

Just a fancy thought because LOK SABHA ELECTIONS ARE FOUR YEARS AWAY and LEFTS ARE LEFT OUT!
